Claude Code reads its behavior from a settings.json file, and this hub collects ready-to-install configurations you can drop into a project or apply globally. Settings decide what Claude Code is allowed to do, which environment variables every session inherits, how the status line looks, and whether usage telemetry is emitted. Instead of hand-editing JSON by trial and error, you can start from a working config and tweak the values that matter to your workflow.

Settings are layered by scope. User settings live at ~/.claude/settings.json and apply to every project; shared project settings live at .claude/settings.json and are meant to be committed so a whole team inherits them; and .claude/settings.local.json holds personal overrides that stay out of version control. When the same key is defined in more than one place, higher-priority scopes win — enterprise-managed policy and command-line flags override local settings, which override shared project settings, which override your user file.

Install any configuration on this page with the Claude Code Templates CLI:

npx claude-code-templates@latest --setting="category/name" --yes

Browse the catalog below, or jump to related building blocks: pair a permissions config with hooks that run on lifecycle events, connect external tools through MCP servers, or add subagents and slash commands. The Claude Code catalog overview shows how the pieces fit together.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does Claude Code store its settings.json file?
Claude Code checks several locations. Your personal, global config is <code>~/.claude/settings.json</code>. Project settings you commit for the whole team go in <code>.claude/settings.json</code> at the repository root, and personal per-project overrides that should not be committed go in <code>.claude/settings.local.json</code>. Enterprise administrators can also deploy managed policy settings that take precedence over all of the above.
How do I install a Claude Code setting from ToolZip?
Open any setting's page and run its install command, for example <code>npx claude-code-templates@latest --setting="permissions/read-only" --yes</code>. The CLI writes the configuration into your <code>.claude/settings.json</code> (or merges it with an existing file). You can read the full JSON on the page first, then edit values like permission rules or environment variables to match your project before you rely on it.
What can I configure in settings.json?
Common keys include <code>permissions</code> (allow, deny, and ask rules for tools and Bash commands), <code>env</code> (environment variables applied to every session), <code>model</code> (override the default model), <code>statusLine</code> (a command that renders the bottom status bar), and <code>hooks</code> (shell commands triggered on events). Telemetry and non-essential network traffic are toggled through environment variables such as <code>CLAUDE_CODE_ENABLE_TELEMETRY</code> and <code>DISABLE_TELEMETRY</code> placed in the <code>env</code> block. For event-driven automation, see the <a href="/claude-code/hooks">hooks hub</a>.
What is the difference between settings.json and settings.local.json?
Both files live in the <code>.claude</code> folder of a project. <code>.claude/settings.json</code> is intended to be checked into version control so every collaborator inherits the same permissions and environment, while <code>.claude/settings.local.json</code> is for your personal overrides and is normally gitignored. When the same key appears in both, the local file wins on your machine, which lets you experiment without changing the shared team config.
How do permissions work in Claude Code settings?
The <code>permissions</code> object holds three lists — <code>allow</code>, <code>deny</code>, and <code>ask</code> — each containing rules that match tools and commands, such as <code>Bash(npm run test:*)</code>, <code>Read</code>, or <code>Edit</code>. Deny rules are blocked outright, allow rules run without a prompt, and ask rules prompt for confirmation; a <code>defaultMode</code> controls anything left unmatched. This lets you pre-approve safe commands while still gating risky ones, and you can reinforce the rules with <a href="/claude-code/hooks">hooks</a> for automated guardrails.
